Haley Barnes is a proud member of the Dallas Society of Women Engineers professional section. Barnes is a Mean Green alumna from the University of North Texas (UNT) System, earning her B.S. degree in Material Science and Engineering in 2018 and her M.S of Medical Sciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in 2020. Barnes now attends the UNT System College of Pharmacy with the intention to work on drug delivery research and clinical implementation.
Barnes joined SWE in 2013 where she was an active member of the University of North Texas collegiate section. During her time with UNT SWE, Barnes served as the section’s Webmaster and Vice president and a Society Region C Future Leader. Her efforts earned Barnes a Region C Governor’s Choice Award. One of her favorite UNT SWE moments was the FY16 Region C conference where Barnes was a selected workshop speaker and an awardee for Most Impactful Recruiting Event. Barnes now serves as the Chair-Elect of the Society’s Internal Marketing Advisory Board.
Barnes is the happy partner of software developer and SWE supporter, Scott McKeefer. She enjoys assisting non-profits in their social media and marketing efforts. Her favorite activity is traveling and icing sugar cookies.
“Every career move I made first occurred through a flash of inspiration. I thought to myself, “I can do this… I want to do this.” When I made the decision to emphasize clinical training over my technical engineering training, I faltered on if I could still call myself an engineer. But even with this non-traditional career path, I use my engineering skills every day. One day, I hope to return to engineering and work alongside biomedical engineers to develop new drugs for my future patients. I am thrilled to speak at this year’s Design Your World, because this event is here to provide young ladies their flash of inspiration in the STEM world.”
