Dallas SWE is pleased to present a new series – Stories of Women in STEM – to feature stories of some of our talented members that highlight their STEM field, background, and advice for pursuing STEM. We hope this blog provides inspiration and an opportunity for girls to learn more from real engineers and the exciting possibilities in a career in STEM. Enjoy our Stories!
Our first feature is with Janrose Samson, Software Engineer at L3Harris Technologies
Dallas SWE: Tell us about yourself! Please include your background, your journey, and why you decided to pursue a STEM field?
Janrose: My name is Janrose Samson, I just graduated with a degree in computer science from The University of Texas at Dallas this past May 2021, and I am a software engineer at L3Harris technologies.
The first job I ever wanted to pursue was an architect because of Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson series. From there, it turned into architecture and interior design, then mechanical engineering, and finally I ended up pursuing computer science after taking my first computer science class my first semester of college. I love the thought of building, making, and tinkering and wanted a profession that incorporated that type of thinking.
Dallas SWE: Tell us about a typical day in your life. What do you do, and what is the best part?
Janrose: A typical day in my life is me getting up early to work out, make breakfast, and get ready for the day. Then I either go into the office to work or work remotely at my apartment, the work varying from coding to systems engineering, sprinkled with my daily scrum and other meetings. I typically make lunch at home since I love cooking, so I’d say my favorite part of the day is having the flexibility to work around lunch and really getting to enjoy cooking and savoring my meal. Some evenings I’ll have networking or mentoring calls – these, I love the most, as I get to learn from other women in STEM. Seeking and giving advice is very fulfilling and helps foster that strong community SWE is known for!
Dallas SWE: Do you have a favorite quote or any famous words that you live by?
Janrose: “The real voyage of discovery consists, not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
