Don’t Let Your Child Park His/Her Brain In Idle this Summer!

Conference Co-Chair Barbara Vilbig, P.E. has prepared the following recommendations on summer plans for your children!

Research has shown that idle brains during the summer cause a setback in learning.  Don’t let your child be a victim of a lazy brain.  Instead take action now.  Enrollment deadlines for camps and programs are imminent.  There are many programs and fun camps happening around DFW:

~100 Programming Summer Camps in 11 weeks of Summer! at UTDallas

SMU Camps: Fun times ahead for kids and teens

UTA Summer Camp Schedule

UNT Summer Camp Preview 2014

Also check out the programs at Community Colleges, area museums and neighborhood centers.

At the very least encourage your child to read.  Set aside a time each day to read.  As a parent you can lead by example, turn off the TV and read.  Success breeds success, so don’t let the summer slide catch your child by surprise.  Embrace the experience and read, read, read!

“Summer learning programs have the potential to help children and youth improve their academic and other outcomes. This is especially true for children from low-income families who might not have access to educational resources throughout the summer months and for low-achieving students who need additional time to master academic content. However, summer learning programs are often an afterthought.”
